Taylor Swift premiered her video for “Safe & Sound” on MTV Monday night during the special “MTV First: Taylor Swift.”
The song is the title track from The Hunger Games soundtrack. Swift paired up with Joy Williams and John Paul White of The Civil Wars to write the song.
Produced by T-Bone Burnett, the song echoes the sober themes of The Hunger Games trilogy, combining ethereal vocals from Swift with haunting harmonies from The Civil Wars.
The music video, shot in a cemetery in Nashville, echoes that atmosphere, featuring a natural Swift sans hair and makeup walking through a field in a long, flowing white dress.
The Civil Wars make their appearance in the video by singing backing vocals in a cabin lit dimly by a single fireplace.
The video makes a more direct connection to The Hunger Games trilogy when Swift enters an empty cabin and finds a Mockingjay pin, a recognizable and important symbol of the book series.
The film, the first from the trilogy of novels about children competing in a deadly challenge, stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.
Both The Civil Wars and Swift have multiple songs on the soundtrack. Their collaboration came about naturally, Swift told MTV.
“I’ve been a Civil Wars fan for about a year, and I think they’re amazing,” Swift said. “I’ve always wanted to work with them.”
It was an easy process to write, record and create “Safe and Sound” with Williams and White, Swift said.
“It just ended up so organically coming together,” Swift said. “I can’t believe it, really.”
The complete soundtrack for The Hunger Games will be released on March 20. The movie premiering shortly after on March 23.
Other popular artists on the soundtrack include Arcade Fire and The Decemberists.
