Shakira, the Grammy Award-winning pop star who has sold fifty million albums, injured her hand on Sunday while trying to avoid getting bitten by a sea lion, according to cbsnews.com.
Shakira was vacationing in Cape Town, South Africa over the weekend and happened to see some sea lions. She was trying to pet them and take pictures with them when one of the sea lions "roared in fury and tried to bite me," according to her Facebook page.
According to Shakira, her brother, whom she called "Super Tony," jumped over her and took her to safety. Both Shakira and Super Tony scratched their hands and legs on the rocks.
"Everyone there screamed, including me," Shakira wrote on her Facebook page after the incident. "I was paralyzed with fear and couldn't move."
Shakira claimed that the sea lion attacked her because it saw the light reflecting off her BlackBerry and mistook it for a fish.
"It probably thought I was teasing it with food and then taking it away from it," Shakira wrote. Her Facebook page showed a picture of two small cuts on her hand, along with several close-up pictures of sea lions.
According to sandiego.gov, sea lions are often territorial and aggressive and should be avoided when possible. They also have sharp teeth and may bite when threatened. The website also explicitly warns against petting wild sea lions.
Shakira wrote that 30 minutes before the incident, she had complained to her guide that she was never able to get close enough to wild animals.
“Oh well, I can't say that anymore!” she wrote. “Now I'm off to see some penguins! I hope they are a bit more friendly!”
The sea lion that approached Shakira retreated safely after the incident, according to huffingtonpost.com.
Shakira's most recent album, Sale el Sol, peaked at seventh on the U.S. Billboard 200 charts, according to billboard.com. It is also the follow-up to Oral Fixation, Volume 2, which reached the top of the Billboard charts in 55 countries, according to shakira.com.
“Loca,” the lead single from Sale el Sol, peaked at 32 on the Billboard Hot 200 charts, according to billboard.com.
