Nickelback Responds to Twitter Haters

Nickelback began responding to haters’ Twitter messages on Sunday and has continued to do so throughout the week.

The marketing person responsible for the band’s page responded to Nickelback joke tweets with comebacks ranging from tame to perhaps a bit harsh.

One tweet, which said Nickelback should “retire,” got a response from the band telling the tweeter to “get it together and make it count,” and that he or she was “trying too hard.”  A blunter non-fan wrote that after hearing a Nickelback song on the radio, “I had an aneurism and violently sh** myself at the same time.  And my dog died.”  The group tweeted back “I bet it was the best day you’ve had in a while #yourwelcome#.”

Opinions about the band’s retaliation vary.  Bloggers Kudos and Kvetches of the Vancouver Courier felt that the retaliation effort was “enjoyably depressing.”

“It makes us worry that Nickelback has too much time on its massage oil-moistened hands,” they wrote.  “And that’s not a pretty sight.”

However, American Idol winner Chris Daughtry, whose music has a similar style to that of Nickelback, supported the idea.

“Your replies to the haters are killing me! Hilarious!” he tweeted on Sunday.  Nickelback replied with “Thanks buddy.  You gotta have fun.”

Lighthearted mockery of Nickelback became popular in November, when the band was selected to play at halftime during the Thanksgiving Day football game in Detroit.  Football fans created a petition over social media claiming that Nickelback was not “Detroit enough” for the halftime spot.  Despite over 50,000 signatures, the band still played in Detroit and has as wide a fan base as ever.

Others have a deeper problem with Nickelback because they feel that the band’s popularity has watered down the rock genre by making soft rock the new norm.

“Rock and roll is dying because people become okay with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world,” said Patrick Carney of the Black Keys in an article from The Star.

Despite the haters, Nickelback has more than 140,000 Twitter followers and has sold over 50 million albums. With this in mind, they’re free to ignore adversaries and enjoy the last laugh.
