Music News: Trent Reznor on Film Scores Year Zero TV Show

By Brooke Wylie, Contributing Editor brooke@livemusicguide.com If weekend filmgoers sense a dark undertone in the score of David Fincher’s The Social Network, they have Trent Reznor to thank for it.  Reznor, the mastermind of Nine Inch Nails, scored the entire film. Fincher’s films are noted for their darkness, such as Se7en and Zodiac. But Fincher himself insists that The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a seemingly lighter films, is a film about death. So, the collaboration with Reznor is well suited.  On his intentions for the score, the rocker said he wanted to “make it something that inched up the drama a little bit. And darkened the mood. Because I think there's a great sense of betrayal and greed that runs through this film that I kind of wanted to play up."  He added that he was proud of how his score turned out and the ways in which it changes the tone of the film. The Social Network opened Oct. 1. Not only is Reznor providing the music for films, his music also is inspiring television shows. It has been reported that Reznor is in talks with HBO to turn the Nine Inch Nails concept album, Year Zero, into a limited two-year television series.  The possible series is not the first spin-off project to stem from the album; Year Zero has already been made into a successful alternate reality game by 42 Entertainment.  The album, set in the year 2022, in an alternate dystopian reality, stemming from Reznor’s discontent with the government in the time of George W. Bush.   Reznor spoke to The Los Angeles Times about the difficulties and the process of creating the album. In the interview Reznor, elaborated on the beginnings of the concept album. “So it started with me trying to write it as a piece of fiction. I was thinking, ‘It could be the worst idea ever in the world but, if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t have to come out,’" Reznor said.  "I started by writing a kind of world bible about what life would be like around 15 or 20 years from now if things continue on the same path. I spent a few weeks filling it in with the events that could lead to this kind of time and place. Then as an experiment I started writing songs about people in this place and from different points of view.” Reznor has said that there will be a second album to conclude the story, and that if the series goes through there will be a second alternate reality game with ties to both the series and the second album.
