Katy Perry has dropped new single “Part of Me” on iTunes, eventually to be on the special edition of her double-platinum album Teenage Dream.
Perry gave an awe-inspiring performance of “Part of Me” at the Grammys Sunday night. The show opened with “E.T.”, which came as a slight surprise to fans since the single originally dropped last summer. After a faux technical breakdown, Perry slowly crooned her way into the first verse of “Part of Me” before punching through a plate glass box to the main stage. Surrounded by fiery visual effects, she exploded into the chorus, the lyrics of which include:
“This is the part of me that you’re never gonna ever take away from me / No / Throw your sticks and your stones / Throw your bombs and your blows / But you’re not gonna break my soul.”
Considering the singer signed final divorce papers from ex-husband Russell Brand only last week, the song seems to be extremely relevant to Perry’s current situation.
As for the special edition of the album, officially named Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, it will include all 12 tracks from the original version, including the six singles to peak at the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Pop Songs Chart (“California Girls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “E.T.” and “The One That Got Away”), which tied Perry with Michael Jackson’s record. Three brand new songs (including “Part of Me”) will be on the re-release, as well as special versions of “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West), “Last Friday Night” (featuring Missy Elliot), and “The One That Got Away” (a special acoustic version, produced by Jon Brion). And the cherry on top: a 7-minute Tommie Sunshine megamix featuring all six No. 1 hits.
In an official statement about the album, Perry said:
"This is the complete story of Teenage Dream. It was an incredible honor to tie the King of Pop's Billboard Hot 100 record, but I’m moving forward and had a few things left to get off my chest. So this is the complete special edition of my album for my fans.”
