John Mayer Releases Clip of New Single "Shadow Days"

John Mayer’s new album, Born And Raised, was sidelined last year due to a granuloma near his vocal cords. But after a successful surgery to mend his throat, John’s back and has just released a 60-second preview of the album’s first single, an almost county-leaning tune titled “Shadow Days,” which he posted on his official Tumblr page.

“I’m excited to share the first bit of sound from the album,” Mayer wrote on his blog. “[I’ve] been looking forward to a post like this since October 14, 2010, the first day I started writing this group of songs. Enjoy.”

The song doesn’t depart too much from typical Mayer songs, with a soothing vocal track over the familiar drums that his fans have come to love over the course of his career. Based on the minute of the song Mayer posted, he comes across as contemplative and remorseful, opening with the line, “Well I ain’t no troublemaker/And I never meant her harm” and makes it known that he’s ready to put his past in the past as the preview closes with, “My shadow days are over.” Could this possibly be Mayer’s song in response to Taylor Swift’s “Dear John?”

If “Shadow Days” is any indication, John Mayer’s new album will be one of his bests. This will be Mayer’s first batch of new material since 2009’s Battle Studies, which generated the hits “Who Says” and “Half of My Heart,” went platinum, and earned him three Grammy nominations.

If all stays on track, Mayer’s upcoming album should be out some time this spring.
