Florence Welch Discusses Details of Upcoming North American Tour

After announcing her first official North American tour on Monday, Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine sat down with MTV and discussed details of the spring tour dates.

The tour follows a wildly successful release of Ceremonials, Florence + The Machine’s sophomore album. The album, which was released in October, reached #1 on British charts and #6 in the United States, respectively.

Despite the dramatic nature that’s typical of Florence performances, Welch promised a more intimate approach for the tour dates, which begin in Santa Barbara on April 14 and end in Atlantic City on May 12.

“In a way, it’s not going to be too big a production; we’ve done a lot of quite extravagant stuff, and that’s been amazing, but for this tour, it’s definitely going to be about showcasing the music,” the 25-year-old English superstar said.

Blood Orange, otherwise known as Dev Hynes, a collaborator and friend of Welch, will serve as the opening act for the tour.

“He was one of the first members of Florence + The Machine; he used to play guitar with me at all of my first gigs,” Welch said of Hynes.

Other notable tour dates on the schedule for Florence this spring include a performance at the famous music festival Coachella on April 22 and a Radio City Music Hall in New York City on May 8.

Despite the prominence of the venues, Welch continued to emphasize that the tour was aimed to highlight the music rather than the dramatics of an extravagant performance.

“The songs are going to be the most important thing. It will be heavily based on the music…no bells and whistles just yet, we’re going to try and keep it pure,” Welch said.
