Iconic English rock band The Cure announced last week that they will revive their “Reflections” show for seven shows in November.
The “Reflections” show – which the band first presented this spring at Sydney’s Vivid Festival – features the albums Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds and Faith, the band’s first three records originally released in 1979, 1980 and 1981, respectively. The records will be played in their entirety.
After experiencing an “overwhelming demand” after the first “Reflections” concert, the band decided to bring the show to Europe and the United States. These seven shows will be the final chance for fans to experience the band’s showcase of their first three albums.
The Cure started releasing music in 1979 with the 13-track Three Imaginary Boys, which was released in the US as Boys Don’t Cry. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the record as number 442 on their 500 greatest albums of all time.
Their second (and darker) album Seventeen Seconds, which reached number 20 on the British album charts, came out in 1980. This was the first album for which Cure front man Robert Smith chose the artwork. Many Seventeen Seconds songs – like “Secrets” and “Three” – fell out of concert play in the 1980s, so their place in the “Reflections” lineup is notable.
Even more somber, the Cure’s third album Faith is the band’s first album to feature baritone guitar. Faith has only nine tracks played by three musicians: Smith on guitar/vocals/keyboard, Simon Gallup on bass and Laurence Tolhurst on drums.
The Cure band members will change throughout the “Reflections” concerts. Smith, Gallup and drummer Jason Cooper will play the 40-minutes Three Imaginary Boys set. For Seventeen Seconds, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell will join the trio. Tolhurst will round out the current Cure quintet during Faith’s performance.
A blog post on the band’s official website indicates a fourth set during the “Reflections” shows, called “Encores of the period.” The post approximates the encore set to be 30 minutes long.
Tickets for the London show are on sale now. Fans can purchase tickets for the American concerts on Ticketmaster starting Oct. 31.
