Southern rock group the Allman Brothers Band announced Saturday the dates for its annual March performances at the Beacon Theater in New York.
The Allman Brothers have played a string of shows at the Beacon in March nearly every year since 1989; skipping only 2008 when Gregg Allman had to undergo treatment for hepatitis C.
Two years ago, the band moved their run of shows to the United Palace Theater when they found out that Cirque de Soleil had booked the Beacon. Playing the different venue impacted sales negatively, and to make things worse, the band had to cancel five shows after a family emergency.
2011’s shows at the Beacon were better. Gregg Allman, who has played over 200 shows as part of these Beacon spring runs, told Rolling Stone at the time that “I don’t think they’ll ever put us out again. I think we got some kind of paper that says they won’t do it.”
The Allman Brothers Band was formed in 1969. The band’s style is renowned for its combination of blues, jazz and country music; live shows often feature improvised songs. The band has released 18 albums; the most recent one, One Way Out, came out in 2004.
Band members currently include Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks, Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson, Warren Haynes, Marc Quinones, Oteil Burbridge and Derek Trucks.
These musicians will play at this year’s 10-concert series, which starts March 9 and continues through March 25. The confirmed dates are below.
The band is honoring the 40th anniversary of its 1972 album Eat a Peach by calling 2012 “The Year of the Peach.” The Allman Brothers Band will start its 2012 ventures by receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in February.
“We just wanted to make music that was honest and play it for friends, which is pretty much what we’ve done,” Trunks told GuitarWorld.com.
Dates for the band’s Beacon shows are below. Tickets go on sale Jan. 6.
