English singer-songwriter Adele has canceled the remaining nine dates on her sold-out North American tour due to health reasons.
On May 26, Adele canceled a show in Minneapolis after doctors ordered immediate rest due to laryngitis. That Saturday, Adele performed in Denver, which was “too early a return to the stage,” according to her official website.
Her illness worsened, and she postponed her Salt Lake City, Utah, concert along with the next three shows – Vancouver, Seattle, Wash., and Portland, Ore. – on May 31.
The tour was scheduled to resume in San Francisco on June 4, but Adele canceled the rest of the dates on Friday. While she was resting in Los Angeles, she saw an otolaryngology specialist who “determined it was imperative that she take the next few weeks to recover with absolute voice rest,” according to a post on her website.
Adele has been on a North American tour in support of her second album, 21, since May 12. In addition to those listed above, the cancellations will also affect San Diego, Los Angeles, Austin, Dallas, Atlanta, Asheville and Nashville.
“I’m really frustrated. I was hoping with a weeks rest I’d be better to sing again straight away,” Adele wrote in a statement. “However there is absolutely nothing I can do but take the doctors advice and rest some more. I’m so sorry. See you soon, love Adele.”
Fans’ reactions on her website range from supportive well wishes – “We’ll be there when you’re back to health” and concerns about the effects of smoking on Adele’s condition – to complaints about the late notice.
Adele’s website post promises that possibilities of rescheduling her missed tour dates are “being investigated.” In the meantime, her Minneapolis show has been rescheduled for June 22.
Adele is scheduled to perform at the iTunes Music Festival later this summer before embarking on a European tour in September.
