Chairlift - Something

Sometimes listeners get set in their ways, as people often do, making it hard for lesser known bands to permeate that thick wall of resistance. Listeners become accustomed to their brand of music and reject anything that defies, challenges or upsets that. American electropop band, Chairlift, is an act that deserves some recognition; their latest album Something proves that trying something new isn’t always a bad thing.

“Sidewalk Safari” and “Amanaemonesia” are eclectic, fun mid-tempo tracks with scattered beats, airy vocals and searing lyrics: “Mmm I’m bad with bows and arrows, I’m not so good at guns/ Poison seems old-fashioned, and hired help’s no fun/ But I do know how to drive a car, faster than a man can run .” “Amanaemonesia” is quite the tongue-twister but an interesting one at that: “Spacing out in a nook and cranny, it’s officially uncanny…their boats are full of flames, they paint the grasses green…they don’t say what they mean.”   This dark electropop track is catchy and melodic.

 “Guilty As Charged” and “Ghost Tonight” are great tracks. The darkness of each beat sets a stunning tone for the rest of the song and serves as perfect backdrops against Caroline Polachek’s gorgeous vocal delivery.

Polacheck continues to display incredible vocal work on “Take It Out On Me.” This 80s-esque track meshes a shimmering melodic beat with passionate breathy vocals. Despite its subtlety, this song makes its mark. “Cool As A Fire” is another impressive track with evocative vocals and a strong delivery: “Wasted the morning again…the look in your eye says you don’t love me anymore…gone with the weather, nothing ever lasts forever.”

Something is an awesome album. There’s really nothing to contest about it—its unique, creatively spun, emotive and even a little creepy at times, which makes for something that listeners can get excited about. Make sure to take it all in because this album is really something special.
