On his way to becoming a star, Wiz Khalifa is wasting no time. In fact, in his latest mixtape Cabin Fever, he says “time is money so I went and bought a Rolex.”
Wiz Khalifa released Cabin Fever last week in preparation of next month’s release of Rolling Papers, his third studio album.
The mixtape kicks off with its best track, “Phone Numbers,” which features Trae tha Truth and Big Sean. The slow paced beat lets the haters pay attention as Wiz reminds the world what he’s worth: “Now when I get paid my check be looking like phone numbers.” Big Sean also takes a stab at objectifying his money: “Counting seven digits, no wonder why the money calling.”
Wiz’s right hand man, Chevy Woods is featured on multiple tracks such as “Middle of You.” The beat speeds up on this track. It has a Kylie Minogue feel, but altered to still fit Wiz Khalifa’s psychedelic style with shooting star and old-school video game sound effects.
One track Wiz probably could have done without is “Errday” featuring Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia. The beat is way too simple and the entire track lacks creativity. It is nothing but constant 808 drums. After a while, Wiz Khalifa repeating, “that’s errday…that’s errday,” gets tiresome.
Wiz Khalifa is quickly becoming a favorite in the rap game. He’s put together a number of mixtapes that have gotten great praise. Unfortunately, Cabin Fever is far from his best work. There are a few tracks: “Phone Numbers,” “Gangbang” and “Middle of You” that make the mixtape worth getting. However, there are more tracks on the mixtape that probably won’t make it to any personal playlists.
Those who enjoyed Cabin Fever should be on the lookout for the release of Rolling Papers next month. Also, check out Mac Miller’s latest mixtape K.I.D.S.
